TRP Events: Intra-Flipkart cricket tourney ends in last ball drama

On the eve of the finals of the World T20, The Rational Pie organized it’s first ever Intra-Flipkart Cricket tournament. And just like the T20 spectacle that has unfolded over the past few weeks, this 7v7 version of the game had equal amount of drama and panache.

The six teams entering the tournament were divided into 2 pools, with the top 2 teams going into the semis. Pool A saw Team 1 (captained by Shivaprasad) , Team 2 (The Indefatigables: Captained by Phani Kumar G) and Team 3 (Schadenfreude: captained by Sameer) fight it out in 3 very close matches. Sameer’s Schadenfreude topped this pool with 2 victories, while Shiva’s team had to bow out of the tournament despite some great performances by Anil and Charan.

Pool B had Team 4(captained by Supan) , Team 5(Captained by Koushik) and Team 3 (Captained by Amber) fight it out in some nerve biting clashes. The match between Supan’s and Koushik’s team was decided by a direct hit run-out in the last over with 2 runs to get, which gave Koushik’s men the win. Amber’s team had a mountain to climb in the last game of the group, where they needed to chase down the target of 27 in just 14 balls to get ahead of Koushik’s team in NRR. Despite the captain Amber’s brave effort, Team 6 fell short of the required NRR and had to bow out of the tournament.

Sameer’s Schadenfreude from Pool A and Supan’s team from Pool B topped the respective groups, with Vignesh, Supan and the much cheered for Arvind from Schadenfreude, the stars until this point. Schadenfreude faced Koushik’s team in the Semis, while Supan’s team faced The Indefatigables.

Being played just a couple of hours before the T20 final, the Semis and Finals of the intra-Flipkart tourney were no less dramatic. In the first semis between Schadenfreude and Koushik’s team, it was Vignesh once again who stood out by taking 4 wickets in his 2 overs and staying unbeaten till the end to get his team through. Koushik’s team had kept it pretty tight in the 2nd innings with Balaji and Avijit bowling tight overs while defending a small target. But it was the last partnership between Vignesh and Ashish that saw Schadenfreude through to the finals.

The 2nd semis between Supan’s team and The Indefatigables was another close affair between 2 good bowling sides. Supan’s team were able to wrap up The Indefatigables’s innings for a meagre 19, with the captain and Rishabh taking 3 wickets each. The Indefatigables though were no way out of this game, as Arvind’s tight spell along with Ayush and Phani picking up 5 wickets almost got them through to the finals. But it was finally Rishabh, who already picked up 3 wickets in the first innings, who got Supan’s team through with a Six to end it.

With the 2 best teams of the tourney through to the finals, another great game was expected. Supan’s team continued the trend of winning the toss and bowling first, and they were able to wrap up Sameer’s Schadenfreude for 27 runs. With the trophy in sight, sledging from both teams just made the tensions higher. Sameer’s team had been a good bowling unit throughout the tournament and they were again able to get early wickets with Deepak and Vignesh keeping it tight. But Shashank, the opener from Supan’s team, played a very intelligent knock and stayed at the crease throughout the run chase. With 6 required of the last over, the batsmen Shashank and Anshul were able to get 4 of the first 5 balls. Just 1 run was needed of the last ball to get to a Super Over in the finals, when suddenly the drama just got tenfold. A simple push to the Legside got the batsmen a single, but a needless overthrow and confusion in the field also gifted Supan’s team an extra run and a memorable win.

After that unbelievable victory, all the players of the winning team rushed out to the field in celebration as Supan’s team clinched the first intra-Flipkart cricket title. The winning captain was given a typical “recognition” by his teammates, as can be seen in the photos below. There was some very sporting applause for Sameer’s Schadenfreude, who stayed unbeaten throughout the 2 days and had some great performances from their players. VIgnesh was awarded the Player of the Tournament for some excellent displays with both the bat and the ball.

As the players dispersed and the focus shifted to the Eden Gardens for the finals of the T20 WC, the next version of this tourney is definitely something on the minds of all the participants.
